Subject: Mega Vintage success
Speedcar legends Sid Middlemass (in #54) and Howard Revell (#98), Peter Bowland, Gordon Benny donned helmets again during the Mega Vintage Speedway Spectacular at the Grafton Showground earlier this month. During the mammoth two-day event a granite-prepared surface provided a good platform for Speedcars, Super Modifieds, Sprintcars, Solos and Sidecars in brilliant sunshine.
Special guests included Jim Airey, Bill Warner, Dicky Briton, Barry Watt, Brian Mannion, Kevin Gormley, Alan Streader, Jack Porritt, Mitch Shirra and Greg Kentwell. They and other veterans of the sport were welcomed during a social, light-hearted weekend put together by Brett Howe and Leigh Drennan. Said Leigh: "We'd more than 100 entries, everyone enjoyed themselves and it's certain to get even bigger next year."
Bikes shared the limelight with Shirra and Craig Hyde turning in some fast laps aboard their solos, while Ray Andrieux (Vincent HRD) and Greg Griffiths (Suzuki) each rode their original sidecars as they appeared at venues such as the Sydney Showground. Many of the cars on show also appeared at the Brisbane Exhibition Ground during the 1960s and 70s.
In the pits the machinery was a sight to behold: Sprintcars formerly driven by stars Larry Burton, Brooke Tatnell and Max Dumesney were supported by speedcars built for A.J Foyt, John Fenton, the Winfield Wedge II (George Tatnell) as well as various TQs, JAP, Jawa, Weslake and GM speedway bikes. On the track Peter Bowland drove a V-twin Speedcar while another - first raced in 1937 - enjoyed good track time.
Although British test captain Nigel Boocock couldn't attend he appreciated his legends medal and has committed to attend the Mega Vintage Speedway Spectacular in 2013.
I counted nine (9) speedcars drivers from the halcyon era of the 1960s - enough for half a feature race field!
