I recently came across this photo.... www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/3301818/Hulton-Archive (sorry no idea how to upload it !) The photo caption states the photo of Fay Taylour was taken at West Ham on 19.08.36. Does anyone know the circumstances surrounding this photo ?..... Does this mean that midgets may have appeared at West Ham perhaps in a demonstration in the 2nd half of a speedway meeting as they did the previous year.

I know precisely the photo you mean Trevor and a great shot it is too. I also know exactly how to cull it and reproduce here but I'm not going to because it states quite clearly on that form beneath that Getty Images don't allow reproduction without payment or "by wireless" which I'm guessing might include on the 'net.
Oddly enough, I mentioned this photo to John in an e-mail only the other day as I have recently acquired a '35 West Ham prog from one of those meetings you mentioned and I had not previously been aware that the track had been used for car racing that early on. I said that I should have been, because I had temporarily forgotten the existence of that Fay Taylour photo! Any idea what she's driving, by the way? Is that a Salmson perhaps?
But in answer to your question about '36, I guess we'll only know more if and when a relevant prog comes to light or one of us finds something useful in some contemporary mag or newspaper.

This would have been in the Johnnie Hoskins promoting era. Not sure when it was or where on this site the photo is but West Ham speedway rider Alan (Allen?) Kilfoyle built his own midget car somewhere around this time. I don't think Fay Taylour ever raced a midget at West Ham but in 1946 she tried to persuade West Ham speedway team manager to let he make a come-back on the bikes. It nevr got beyond the asking stage though.
