Spike Rhiando, Billy Hole, Oliver Hart, Eddie Rigg, Ted Taylor, Andre Leons, Wally Cuff, Graham Hole, Squib Burton, Archie Hanscombe, Jack Mountford, Eric Salmon, Dave Hughes, Jim Martin, Vic Worlock, Dickyyy Bradley, Walt Perry, Wilf Davis, Ron Major, Roy Pulford, Jimmy James, Bob Syvier, Walter Mackereth, John Reason, Derek Tailby, Dickyyy Tolley, Phil Hart, Len Williams, Vic King, Alan Hunt, Frank Johnson, Johnny Young, Lionel Watling, Jim Tolley, Jimmy Wright, Les Tolley, Ron Wilson I make that list 37 drivers of whom 24 were also speedway riders. I hope my count is correct - it's late at night and the eyes are tired so I may be one or two adrift either way. But why were so many speedway riders driving midget cars. I could add also that two more of the recognised midget drivers, Spike Rhiando and Squib Burton, had been speedway riders pre-war. That would make only 11 primary midgets drivers plus three more - Geoff Green, Mac MacLean, Jim Martin - added in an update post for 1951. What was the reason for this state of affairs?

The possibility so many speedway riders are listed is the 1951-52 winter saw the formation of the Midland League centred on Coventry, Leicester, Cradley Heath and Birmingham. The teams also featured some speedway riders from the tracks involved. A speedway rider Johnnie Reason was in fact far and away the best driver in the competition. Somewhere on here there is a lengthy article about this league competition which was the last serious attempt to organise a league competition for midget cars. Surprisingly I don't see Johnnie Reason named in the drivers list!
