Toby, this meeting has recently the subject of some discussion on the oldtimespeedway website. Here is part of one of my posts there. I have a different score for the match to you though. I have taken the one given below directly from the meeting programme, which is immaculately filled in and, I would suggest, likely to be correct.
Evans was not programmed and was only drafted in after Peart crashed in heat five and had to be stretchered off. I think the surname suggests Evans was a local who got the call up simply because no one else was willing or able to take Peart's place. If that is the case, it's somewhat ironic that what may have been the only true Welshman racing, ended up on the English team. I would also suggest that Evans maybe didn't know what he was doing when it came to driving a Skirrow, because he crashed (without injury) into the fence on his second outing.
The final scores were Wales 33 England 27.
