Midget auto racing first occurred in Canada in Toronto in 1935. Dave Boon on the Canadian Motorsport History Group did a detailed look at it recently.
Midgets on the west coast came to Vancouver, BC, first in 1937 and again from 1939 onward. The first races were indoors at the annual exhibition. From 1939 to 1941 the midgets raced across the street from the exhibition grounds at Con Jones Park (now Callister Park) on a 1/5th mile dirt track built on the soccer/baseball field. Northwest stars like Swede Lindskog, Chick Barbo, Les Anderson and the beginning of locals getting in the act. Motorcycles also raced there with legend Trev Deeley getting his racing start in 1939.
After the Second World racing resumed with the BC Midget Auto Racing Association holding events at various fairgrounds eventually encouraging a local Burnaby, BC, businessman, Andy Digney, to build a 1/4 mile paved oval, Digney Speedway. Again, northwest stars like Shorty Templeman and others raced. Local car owner/builder Gordon Reelie was very involved then right up to his passing in the early 1990s. His drivers and cars won the Washington Midget Racing Association championship a few times.
The BCMARA also built False Creek Speedway at Venables and Raymer in Vancouver, BC, the pavement of which is still there. That track operated from 1957 to 1962.
Big cars/sprint cars were based on Vancouver Island with the forming of the BC Automotive Sports Association. More about it can be found here: www.motorsportscentral.com/langford.asp

The Midget car racing did not happen at Dundas, no idea why. There was however racing in the northwest US and up into Canada around 1974.
was reading somewhere {Google I think} that World of Outlaws will be having a few meetings in eastern Canada this year, Montreal and Ontario I think. Check out Google.

I saw on one of the adverts in the Speedway In Canada 1959 photo album about midget car racing to take place at Dundas aka Ranch 11 near Hamilton. Did this ever take place and what strength does midget car racing have in Canada - then and now. What about sprint car racing in Canada - that's midgets 'big brother' formula and really awesome to watch believe me.
