There were only two meetings at Cobridge prior to the outbreak of War
Here's the main text of the cutting transcribed...
Staffordshire Sentinel, FRIDAY, JUNE 30, 1939 COBRIDGE CAR RACING OPENING MATCH OF SEASON REST OF ENGLAND’S SUCCESS
The opening car speedway racing at the Cobridge Motordrome last evening had a match race between Cobridge Tigers and a team, led by Walter Mackereth, as representing the Rest of England. The Rest were five points in arrear at the end of the fifth heat, but some fine riding by Johnny Young gave him first place in the two following heats. Cobridge were eventually beaten by 30 points to 23. Six cars, in each of two heats, provided the other main feature. Despite minor collisions on the bends, all the cars kept to the track without overturning, and Mackereth, who had had a successful evening, was leading Worswick round the last bend when a burst tyre robbed him of first place. Mackereth and Les White each scored seven points for their respective teams in the match race, but Johnny Young, with eight, was the leading points scorer. Apart from the appearance of riders with national reputations, the meeting featured Harry Skirrow, the designer and pioneer of midget racing cars in this country. Among the novelty items introduced into the programme was a demonstration of broadsiding by a local boy, Dare Devil Ken, who is only seven years of age.
The following were the point scorers in the match race;
Tigers - White 7, Worswick 6, Turvey 5, Mills 3, Heath 2. Rest - Young 8, Mackereth 7, Murden 5, Skirrow 4, Bennett 3, Marsh 3.
The track was opened by the Haywood Hospital Queen (Miss Gladys Dawton), who was accompanied by the two Princesses in their robes of office.
