USA throttle man ALEX Bright has broken the stranglehold of Davey Ray in the Magic Man 34, claiming the feature race from Casey Shuman and Mark Brown in a fantastic race that took less than 15 minutes to complete at the Perth Motorplex Speedway on Saturday night.
The two Americans were locked in an entertaining duel for much of the race before the four-time winner withdrew from the contest when leading and with only seven laps to go in the race that honoured the late, great Michael Figliomeni.
Bright started on the outside of the front row and hit the lead early before trading countless slide jobs with Ray that kept the crowd on the edge of their feet.
“I couldn’t be happier,” Bright said.
He said it was a long journey but well worth it “to work with a great group of guys and an awesome car”.
Bright didn’t think he was going to win but said his confidence peaked after the pole dash.
“Awesome track…awesome event…and yeah…love it.”
Shuman started from third and had hoped there would be more restarts.
“I had planned on maybe seeing a lot more yellows and was trying to conserve on tyres a little bit,” Shuman said.
“I didn’t quite play in our hands.
“I love coming down here, the atmosphere is really cool.”
Shuman has only contested the race twice and paid tribute to the Figliomeni family and event organisers.
“Awesome people, it’s cool to come here and race in (Michael Figliomeni’s) his honour and hopefully I can come back next year.”
Brown is a previous winner of the race and started from position 15 to race through the pack.
“It was tough work...it was just hammer down,” Brown said.
“I am just thankful to run in the memory of Michael…he was the best I have ever seen. We can’t bring him back but we have got the best family.”
Brown was happy with the result and wants to leave WA leading the Speedcar Pro Series after the next two rounds are held in Collie and Bunbury next weekend.
Scott Glazebrook finished fourth and was the leading local driver, crossing the line ahead of Lee Redmond, Travis Mills, Matt Smith, Paul Robinson, Daryl Clayden, Alfonso Guadagnino, Andy Pearce, Jack Alfirevich, Blake Mills, Daniel Golding and Troy Jordan.
Adam Clarke, who won the opening round of the Motorplex Speedcar series a week and a half ago, was out of the race after 24 laps.
National champion Neville Lance was out after 23 laps and struggled all night.
It was tough for some of the visiting drivers including New Zealander Michael Pickens who damaged an engine at the start of the night and American Steve Buckwalker who only completed two laps in the feature race.

"Those Things With Wings" SPRINTCARS :
Second generation Sprintcar racer DAVID Priolo stole the lead from Jason Kendrick on the last lap to win the Magic Man 34 Sprintcar at the Perth Motorplex Speedway on Saturday night.
The 34-lap feature race decided round two of the AHG Sprintcar Series with Priolo, taking the win by 0.567 of a second after Kendrick got baulked by lapped traffic in the dying stages with South Australian Luke Dillon taking third.
Priolo started from position four but didn’t show his hand until late in the show after Mark Wells, who started from position two, led for much of the event.
Wells was out on lap 24 after his front axle broke and he hit the back straight fence after running hard on the track’s high line.
“This is really special for me,” Priolo said.
“Michael Figliomeni was one of my childhood heroes when I was going to the races with my father at Claremont Speedway each week.
“Tonight is even more special as I have got his cousin Rick Geneve on the spanners.”
Priolo said he attacked the race the same way as Figliomeni would have but “I made sure I kept my tyres under me.”
Kendrick who started on pole, lamented a missed opportunity when he was held up by lapped cars.
“I think these lapped cars need to think about what they are doing as well,” Kendrick said.
“But you can’t take anything away from David, he did an awesome job.”
Dillon, who played the Joker card to double his points for the round, looked strong in his first race of the season for the Diamond Bay Motorsport team.
“We were having a pretty hard night,” Dillon said.
“I made a few mistakes in the first heat and in the second I couldn’t really keep up.
“We are pretty happy with third.”
He was looking forward to going out on the road with the Diamond Bay team.
“That will be awesome, they have got a lot of good ideas.”
Cameron Gessner, who started on the second row and looked strong early, was forced to race through the pack after getting caught up in someone else’s incident earlier on.
He finished fifth, ahead of Kye Scroop, Callum Williamson, Daniel Harding, Trent Pigdon, Jason Pryde, Ryan Lancaster, Sheldon Brady and Cale Sotiroff.
Wells looked very strong for most of the night and set quick time at the start of the show.
He attacked the track’s high line and clipped the fence a couple of times before the front axle eventually gave up and he hit the fence.
“When I got up on the wall it must have hurt the front axle coming out of turn two and I just went straight into the wall.”
