I have narrowed my list to three drivers as to who was the best post-war Skirrow driver. I throw these names into the hat and hope for some comment - this is not a rating order by me but just a selection. (1) Walter Mackereth (2) Johnnie Reason (3) Jimmy Wright Any portrait or other photos of these guys would be a nice to add to what I hope will result also in some comments - and maybe a rating order. Or are there others more worthy of a listing?

Johnnie Reason, then Coventry motorcycle speedway star, who was also the leading driver in the 1951-52 Midland Midget Car League. He was in the same side as the legendary Walter Mackereth. The portrait photo is of Jimmy Wright, like Reason also a speedway rider. Wright was still active in midget car racing for Dave Hughes' Skirrow group at least until 1958. Attachments:

Derrick Tailby, Arch Handscomb, Lionel Watling, Len Williams, Ron Major, Wilf Davis. They were all a match for the trio named.

Apart from there now being an impressive (!!) list of names to this thread just what criteria is there to give a ratings list or whatever for them. Just what will it prove some 50-60 years after they last raced and I doubt if there's many forum group members who have seen any of them in race action.

These sort of lists are of value - provided the driving results of those mentioned are SERIOUSLY analysed and not used to put forward a driver just because he happens to be a personal favourite

After my initial message, this is my rating list based on the three drivers that I suggested and the other names subsequently put forward: (1) Walter Mackereth (2) Arch Hanscomb (3) Wilf Davis (4) Johnnie Reason (5) Jimmy Wright (6) Derrick Tailby (7) Ron Major (8) Lionel Watling (9) Len Williams Obviously these ratings are based very largely on the period when there was a Midland League albeit briefly in the 1950s and on the season later held in Scotland.

There should be consideration for Cyril 'Squib' Burton, a leading Skirrow driver pre-war and also included in the Leicester team in the Midland League in 1951-52.

If the Midland League is a main criteria why is Jimmy Wright there? He only scored five points for his team Cradley Heath. I looked it up elsewhere on this forum.
