The last meeting in Les White's logbook is Rye House on 7 August 1939. A number of meetings previous to this at other tracks had been cancelled. Was this the last prewar meeting - I take it there was no wartime activity?

One meeting at Belle Vue, I think 1943, I will check the date later.

Was this the last prewar meeting - I take it there was no wartime activity? Possibles leading up to start of WW2 on September 3 1939 could be Coventry and maybe Cobridge (Stoke)? Any details of that 1943 Belle Vue meeting? That's certainly a new interest for me.

The mention of Australian driver Gruff Garland elsewhere on the discussion site reminds me that somewhere I once read he was due to race a series of match races against top drivers at Coventry. The old brain box nags me that this was for August 1939 so that could have been one of if not the last prewar meetings in the UK?

There were a couple of match races at Belle Vue in 1940.
Walter Mackereth V Eric Worswick won by Walter Mackereth
Walter Mackereth V Johnny Young won by Johnny Young
Can't remember the exact dates, but what I do remember is that the Dunkirk evacuation was inbetween the two events

There is no record of 1943 midget car events at Belle Vue on the Speedway Researcher website, but that does not mean there was not one. The site is for speedway bike racing and it would seem that midget cars only get recorded if they were part of a meeting that also featured spedway bikes and sometimes maybe, sidecars as has been the case with Norwich in the 1950s.

So was there much solo racing during the war - I just assumed it would have all been cancelled? Certainly there was no other motorsport.

There was hardly anything for midget cars but there was regular solo racing at Belle Vue for thee duration and a few 1940s meetings at West Ham and Crystal Palace. It's all on the Speedway Researcher site. www.speedwayresearcher.org.uk/

[quote It's all on the Speedway Researcher site. www.speedwayresearcher.org.uk/[/quote]Thanks, that's a terrific resource. Interesting how much more complex the picture is when you see the facts laid out like this.
