I tend to agree with your observation Rod, but I think you'll agree that the car is a little beauty. I wonder what happened to it?

Definitely an early 500cc powered F3 car, owned, built and raced by Mr George Hartwell. Check it out here at top left with competition #1 applied. Part of photo caption reads: In the background are some interesting 500cc racing cars - from left to right, George Hartwell's Monaco Attachments:

Here's what it looked like under the body. Photo caption/info this time says: The car is the George Hartwell 'Monaco' Special and features a Francis Beart tuned Norton engine and was particularly successful at speed trials where you didn't need the torque of the JAP engines used by most of the opposition. And what's that slightly to the right of 'the midget'. Is it Spike Rhiando's famed big circuit 500cc racer?

Well ytf, it's not the Trimax if that's what you're thinking. The rest of that photo caption reads: "In the background are some interesting 500cc racing cars - from left to right, George Hartwell's Monaco, alongside that either a MkIII or IV Cooper, then a MkII Cooper, and finally what could well be an Iota - Gerry Millington's Milli-Union has been suggested."
By pure coincidence, I happened to be speaking to Spencer Elton - himself a former 500 driver - at the Autosport show on Saturday and we were discussing Spike Rhiando. Spencer was telling me that Spike was one of three people behind the Iota marque, so if that car at the far right is an Iota, then there is a Rhiando connection in this picture after all.

Its not a race meeting as there was none with George Hartwell #1. With a quick look through the literature to hand I would say the only match is Boscombe, Dorset, speed trials, 7 August 1948. Moss was quickest in the class, Hartwell in the Monaco was second 0.16sec behind Moss' 31.40sec.

Hello Terry You've led me on to this site - are you trying to stop me working? I don't think the photo of the 1750 Alfa with the Monaco in the background is Boscombe, I've been there and there are quite a lot of trees around. I think the venue could be Merston Airfield near Chichester. It was only used once in September 1947 attracting a good entry including Mr Hartwell in the Monaco. I managed to find a photo of the car ther from the Guy Griffiths Collection. All the best Julian
