Scotland had brief flirtation with Midget Cars in 1953. A couple of meetings were staged at Ashfield in Glasgow (then home of the Giants but now home of the Tigers.) after the speedway closed down late September. A few meetings were staged at Stepps Stadium on the eastern outskirts of Glasgow earlier in the 1953 season. The meetings at Stepps got a fair bit of coverage in the contemporary newspapers when they started up. I know Norrie raced cars in 1937 at White City, Glasgow but I can't confirm his driving in 1953. He was down as Clerk of The Course for the Ashfield meeting of 13th October 1953 and wrote the programme notes. The promoter at both Ashfield and Stepps was Allan Gray. The programme notes for a meeting at Stepps said "Dave Hughes. The heavyweight pioneer of the present Midget Car projects. he started with one car, was completely captivated with the baby fliers and went on to form the Company which owns and controls all the cars now racing. Owing to his 17 stone his driving is not as spectacular as some, but to make up for this his track craft and steady handling of his car keeps him to the forefront."

Skirrow filler cap1/jpg[/img] From: Terry and Ray Wright <tsrwright@gmail.com> Subject: Re: Picture? To: "John Hyam" <speedstox12@yahoo.com> Date: Monday, 21 February, 2011, 1:41 The distinguishing feature of the Ibister/Handscomb car is the fancy fuel filler cap, ex MG I think, which is also on the car I have. I haven't seen it on any other Skirrow. Also the lever operating the clutch pedal lock is on the lefthand/nearside on both cars and most other Skirrows I have seen have it on the other side. I wonder if Norrie or Arch mean anything to you and if you recognise this as the car I now have? Also attached are current pics of the filler cap on my car. Regards Terry Attachments:

I see Norman Isbester riding at the Celtic Ground, Parkhead Glasgow "Saturday last " reported Motor Cycle 3 May 1928. This obviously preceeded first meeting under lights at Stamford Bridge and surely must have been under lights although this is not mentioned in reports I have read. Anyone know more? I guess Norman is Norrie?
