Has anyone reliably catalogued or classified the dates and details of the JAP speedway various port configurations, barrel lengths and fin details plus whether 4 or 5 stud? I have the Clew books and know what the general picture is but are there any other sources?
Need this to sort out some info about the origins of the 8-80.

I don't suppose there's much here you don't already know Terry, or anything like the detail you're after either, but it's all I have - hope it's of some help. Attachments:

hi i have all specs for jap engines as regard to the 5 studs the specs are the same as the 4studs the only difference was the introduction of fift head stud to stop the head distorting and blowing this was on the early engines jap sorted this problem and went back to 4studs you may find most people refer to the 5studs as the long 5 john clews book are a good source of info but there are many others

How about the old Skirrows? Weren't they chain driven - running between the driver's leg! - and using 996 JAP twins? I am not a technical person myself but that's my understanding of the mechanical aspect of those great old dirt track racers.

Skirrow chain ran to the left of the drivers left leg. No chain guard, and a bit close for comfort.......
