When you view the youtubes with the midget car races you readily see why the sport overtook the bikes in the USA, New Zealand and Australia and why British speedway bike promoters ahve always been so opposed to midgets and done all they can to stifle the cars. It also shows from the Argentina youtube further good reasons why for specatcle midget cars on dirt are far more excirinting (in the main) than four guys sliding bikes round a dirt oval IMO.

This message currently on the oldtimespeedway site about a meeting at Marine Gardens, Edinburgh, in 1938, regarding a speedway and midget cars meeting may be of interest:
"A midget car race was also staged in which four cars took part. The drivers were Walter Mackereth (Capt. of Coventry Car Speedway), Les White (Coventry), Spike Rhiando (America and Capt. of Lee Bridge Car Speedway) and Stan Mills. Mackereth took an early lead and continued in front for the four laps to finish in 1 min. 22 and two fifth secs, faster time than many of the cycles put up. This time also beat the four laps clutch start record."
