Billy Murden was in at the start of midget car racing in 1934 and was still active until around 1949 or 1950 when he raced in meetings at Brafield in Northampton. Murden drove his own built car, which I think was rwd. He seems to have been a devoted follower of midget car racing for some 15 years but has never had a pat on the back for his loyalty to the formula. What more is known about him? I read he was a former speedway rider. Is this also correct. There is a story that in 1948 Murden actually raced on a speedway bike against the American driver Noel Coath at Walthamstow, a race won by the American. Is this fact or just a legend that has grown dust over the years because its been repeated so often without anyone really clarifying it. Where did Murden come from? I have read that in 1946 Murden raced in Holland and in 1947 took part in a series of matches at Paris in France.

I have been asked by several members for more information on Billy Murden but what appears here is about all that I know of him. Sorry folks! However he gets a quite a few mentions in the history chapters on the site.

It has been claimed that Billy Murden was a speedway rider before trying midget cars in 1934. It is also said tha Murden raced on a speedway bike and was beaten by a member of the London based USA midget car team at Walthamstow in 1948. However, it could well have been the result was decided before the start. The Americans could hardly allow one of their cars to lose such a contest.

Billy Murden also raced in Sweden in 1936; when he and another guy (I think his name was St Nairn?) put on a demonstration at a trotting track near Stockholm.

In the Laurie Maxton thread, I posted that I have a scan of a Stad Buffalo (Paris) programme dated 12/13-7-47, which was kindly sent to me by Derek Bridgett. I'd like to post it here, but.... ! Anyway, this programme also shows Billy Murden in the entry list and, in line with what weewillie said about him using his own home-built car, he is down to drive a "Murden Special", rather than a Skirrow or an Elto, which seems to bear that out.

Two rare photos relating to Billy Murden. (1) Billy Murden's car in the Belle Vue pits 1938. (2) Billy Murden in action at the Buffalo Stadium, Paris, France, in 1947. Photos: Rod Pashley Collection.Attachments:

Is more known about both Billy Murden and also midget car racing in Sweden please?

Has it ever been confirmed that before he took to midget car racing in the mid-1930s that Billy Murden had been a speedway rider? Also, is it definite that he was the speedway rider who rode against a member of the USA midget car touring team at Walthamstow (? I think) in May 1948?
