Meeting date Sunday 1 June 1947 Report from Eastbourne Gazette, 4 June 1947
RACING THRILLS AT ARLINGTON
A novel type meeting - racing between midget cars provided plenty of thrills at Arlington Speedway on Sunday Afternoon. Well over 3.000 people stood in the blazing sun to watch the races. Before the meeting started Mr John Cooper gave a demonstration of the “Cooper Special," one of the new 500 c.c. Iota cars being used for hill climbs and short distance racing. A grand parade of all cars preceded the first heat between Holland and France. The first heat was won by car number 10, "Dutch" Mackereth In 2 mins. 29 4/5 secs. and Holland took eight points while France took four. The USA. beat England by six to three in the second heat, car number being 6 lapped by Spike Rhiando in the bright red number one who won the race from Laurie Maxton in 2 mins 33 4/5 secs. The third was a close battle for first place between "Dutch" Mackereth and Johnny Young in cars 10 and 5. Johnny Young won at the end of eight laps by about one sixteenth of an inch. Points were even between Holland and England, seven each, and the time was 2 mins 34 3/5 secs. Only two cars - both French - finished in number four between the USA and France, the Europeans won nine more points. Time was 2 mins 31 secs. Race 5 was the fastest of the meeting. "Dutch" Mackereth In the number 10 car made 2 mins. 25 2/5 secs and points were equally divided between Holland and the USA. George Chiswell, the only finisher in race six, covered the eight laps in 2 mins. 37 3/5 secs, and made five more for France. Total scores were: Holland 20, France 18, USA 11, England 10.
Four out of five starters in the Grand Marathon finished, number 10 winning in 3 mins. 41 3/5 secs, over 12 laps.
A touch of humour was added to the proceedings the appearance of Chasewater Charlie who rode many pedal cycles of peculiar construction with consummate skill and also put up a good turn of speed on the "dirt" with 12-inch high motor cycle. The announcer was kept busy all afternoon establishing contact between lost articles and their owners - everything from a bull terrier pup to a small boy was temporarily mislaid during the meeting.
There was also a meeting on Sunday 31 July 1949 at Arlington. I cannot upload pictures at the moment but I have a dubious quality newspaper scan which shows Rhiando and also Dave Hughes and the Northampton team.

An intersting item in regard to Arlington (Eastbourne) in 1947. But I think the driver named as GEORGE Chiswell must surely have been FRANK Chiswell?

You'll be correct. The cutting actually uses the French spelling "Georges". I think the promoters were using a great deal of pretence!
