I think you will find that midget cars had some races on the programmes of the famous war time speedway meetings at Belle Vue, possibly a match race series between Walter Mackereth and Charlie Pashley was among these events?

The attached advert is a cutting from Manchester Evening News 20 April 1940 The Daily Mirror (22 April 1940) reported: "Walter Mackereth (Coventry) retained the British Speedway Car Championship, defeating his challenger, Eric Worswick (Manchester) by twenty lengths on Belle Vue track.
