I understand that the original British version of the Elto midget car, as used at Belle Vue, initially ran with the Elto engine. However, after they were consistently defeated by the Skirrow, the Elto's also had JAP 996-twin engines mounted. Is this fact or fiction?

I am certain that the Elto's were refitted with 996cc JAP twin-engines similar to those used in the Skirrows.

Rod Pashley will know the full story of this I'm sure, because I'm pretty sure his dad Charlie was responsible for these conversions.

Dead right......Dad picked up a shiny new V twin jap from the factory, for his own car.. the improvement was good enough for E. O. Spence to ask Dad to fit them to all the Belle Vue cars.. As a matter of interest, Dads old JAP motor was last heard of in some sort of vintage speedboat trying for a class speed record some ten or more years ago...He told me that the elto motors could not be tuned well enough to cope with our tracks and weather.....

From this comment, am I correct in thinking the Belle Vue Elto midgets were owned by the stadium rather than individual drivers?

Belle Vue built the cars for sale...I dont think any were......B.V. in the shape of E O Spence gave one to Dad (I think after he installed a JAP motor in his), on the understanding that any succesful modifications were also applied to the rest of the cars.....speaks for itself, I think....

He always seems to be called E O Spence. Any idea what his forenames were?
