Having found myself in the aforementioned "Sarf" London yesterday, I decided to take the opportunity of finding the site of 'The Dog Field'. After considerable faffing about with the A-Z, I got there. Of course, there's nothing to see; it's just a large, apparently very well cared for, cricket ground. When I got home and after having a think, we suddenly remembered that sites which appear to have no remaining trace of a one-time race track when you are standing looking at them, often show up very clearly on satellite pictures. I took a chance on Google Earth - and check this out! maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Burford+Road+SE6&hl=en&ll=51.435862,-0.029928&spn=0.001515,0.003819&sll=52.8382,-2.327815&sspn=6.013168,15.644531&hnear=Burford+Rd,+London+Borough+of+Lewisham,+London+SE6,+United+Kingdom&t=h&z=18 Looks like before they built their clubhouse, there would have been the outline of a complete oval track there. Interestingly, the site is actually referred to as the Rubens Street Oval! I think though, they are trying to make out it's an oval as in, The Oval at Kennington. Whatever. That faint outline looks like just what I was expecting to find.

Not yet! Actually (as a Sarf Londoner) I was hoping you might be able to tell us that... By the way, do you recall when that Short Circuit article was that you wrote? Sadly I have no idea when my article and photos re the Dog Field, Catford, were used in 'Short Circuit.' I did have some negatives - long vanished - which would have been dated. Just a hunch - probably in the early 2000 era.

Mount Stadium, Catford as on wikipedia Catford Stadium, London In 1934 several speedway meetings were held on a track constructed inside the dog track. In 1949 permission was sought to operate speedway from the stadium again but permission was refused.[4] Not to be confused with The Mount stadium, another stadium in Catford.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catford_Stadium Original source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catford_StadiumDoes anyone know about the Mount Stadium? Did any midget car races take place there?

Although I think we can fairly safely say The Mount was never used as a race track (for the moment!) you bring up an interesting point, John. Often one needs to know the "real" names of these places to be certain which venue one is talking about. I always say, think Eastbourne/Arlington, Ringwood/Matchams Park and so on. And for future reference the true name of Catford Stadium was Ladywell Greyhound Stadium. I went past the site on my South London visitation incidentally, and it's all been demolished now - the site is just covered in 40 cubic yard skips full of rubble.
