Name: Victor Conde Email address: vhsconde@gmail.com Subject: midget racers on European tour? -/+ 1950s Message: Hello I am an enthusiast living in northern Spain (Vigo), I remember seeing a bunch of Midgets racing in my hometown in the early 1950s, I have not been able to trace any history as to whether there was an US or Aussie team visiting Spain in those years, all my local enquiries draw a blank, but not my fond memories as a very young child seeing fourteen or fifteen midgets driving through town to the local soccer stadium to compete on an ash track. Any information will be greatly appreciated or just point me in the right direction. Keep up the good work. Sincerely, Victor Conde

My guess is neither Australian or American midgets but more likely a venture by Dave Hughes and his Skirrow group?

There were two meetings during 1947 in Paris, France, at which British and Spanish midget car drivers competed. I've forgotten the names of the Spanish drivers but the English drivers included Billy Murden, Walter Mackererth and Frank Chiswell,

A comment on this site in the Frank Chiswell biography in regard to the 1946 meeting in Holland where Spanish drivers competed: "The meeting in Holland was at a horse trotting track near The Hague on October 13, 1946. The drivers were Vic Patterson, Walter Mackereth, Frank Chiswell, Laurie Maxton, Johnny Young, Billy Murden, Gene Crowley, Bob Breeze, Charles Gardner and Eric Hough from England. There were two Spanish drivers, Don Juan Ameyrich and Ramos Martinez, plus Dutch drivers Piet Van Aartsen, J Binde and W Cremer." The article adds: "The four meetings in France in July, 1947, featured Mackereth, Maxton, Young, Eric Worswick, Doug Wilcox, Chiswell, Cecil Garland (Australia) and Ameyrich (Spain), all driving Skirrows. Hough and Gardner drove Eltos, and Murden raced in his own car.
