Barry Butterworth.jpg Ron Hogan built this Ford V860 midget for Barry Butterworth in 1961. He used it for that season (1961-62) at Auckland's Western Springs and won the Feature when he made his first appearance there driving the car. A bit of a correction to the above. The Ron Hogan midget was finished some time in the 1954 season and the drive was initially given to Ian Holden. Ian couldn't get on with the car, and probably had a few words with Ron as well. The car had a steering problem that Ron thought was a driver problem and the car was parked for a while. Des Herrick ran it for quite a while after Ian vacated it. When Barry Butterworth jumped in the car it had been modified from original, and I think Ron no longer owned it. Barry certainly was the only driver to get anything out of it. After Barry's time in the car it raced infrequently with a number of different drivers. Fast forward to the early 2000s and the car was bought by Garth Hogan (son of Ron), and Garth had John Stanley restore the car back to its original state. Fortunately this was before Ron died and Garth was able to get plenty of information on how the car was built originally and no doubt plenty of parts from Ron and his stash. There is currently a book being written on the Hogan's and no doubt there will be plenty in there about this unique midget built by a talented engineer. Somewhere I have a bit more detail on who drove the car through its life, but it is temporarily mislaid amongst my stacks of reference material, will add the info to this at some point. Here is a photo from a 1954/55 Western Springs programme. And some photos of the restored car.

An update on the history of the Hogan V860.
Owned and built by Ron Hogan and driven by Ian Holden in 1954. After a few weeks Ron and Ian had some differences regarding the car and Ian went off to drive a Kurtis V860 that had recently arrived in NZ. The next owner was Cyril Goldfinch who had Des Herrick drive the car and many changes were made to the car. Barry Butterworth owned and drove the car for a while and it then went through a few other owners and drivers until Stan Dumpleton bought it and took it too Australia. It was returned to New Zealand by Bill Jardin and ended up with Mike Ryan and Bryan Yates who used parts from it for their ex Ron Ross V860.
Garth Hogan purchased the remains of the ex Ross car to begin the restoration and fortunately the original chassis rails, which have another history of their own, turned up at Gordon McIssac's museum and were handed over to Garth to complete the full restoration. The car had its first run in a long time about 6 weeks ago at the Auckland Vintage Speedway Clubs track at Meremere.
