David you are correct. Its been a while and memory changes things.
Yes they were big v-twins with a lot of compression.
To start the motor we would push the car back with the ,clutch engaged, to bring the engine just past compression. Then when we pushed the car forward we could get one free revolution before compression.
One night at Coventry they were in a hurry to get us out for our race so a group of guys in the pits attempted to start my car and they wouldn't listen when I told them to push me back - so I just engaged the clutch and they went falling past the car when it stopped suddenly.
By this time some of our guys came running back and started me properly. Ho Ho.
There were also some rear engine 500cc JAP powered midgets there also. These were the big singles.
You know I can still hear those engines running- they were a wonderful sound.

Clayton, you said the midget motor was a "JPS", but I wonder if you meant "JAP", which were big v-twin aircooled jobs -- some used in m'cycle combos. Do you remember if that was the name?
I already got a nice message from someone who saw the pic and identified the Brafield parking gate on the Horton Road, in the background!!!
