There are records of Skirrows appearing at many London tracks in the pre-war years, 1937-39. I wondered if they ever raced at Rye House. That track's promoter then was Dicky Case, better known as an Australian test match rider - but he also had a dabble with midgets in the early 1930s when he rode for Hackney Wick. That's Dicky in the Hackney speedway colours in the photo. Dicky Case 2Attachments:

As far as I know the only time that Skirrows appeared at Rye House was in Aug 38.
They were part of the Putt Mossman show. At this meeting Lane White crashed and injured his arm which kept him out of racing for a few weeks. I have been told Lane's nephew that a report of this accident appeared in the national press, but so far I have not been able to track down this article. The local library at Hoddersdon have no records of this event.
Incidentally the guy who owns the ex Les White Skirrow (currently up for sale) has a poster advertising the Mossmon show at Rye House.

I wonder what did Mossman do with his Skirrow(s) in his show?
He was in New Zealand 1937 (37/38?) after which a Skirrow type 1 of his ended up in Sydney - the one Cec Garland and John Crouch and maybe others drove there

That's an interesting name Cec Garland. He was an Australan who pre-WW2 besides driving midgets also rode as a speedway rider. He joined one of the teams in Scotland promoted by Johnnie Hoskins. But Johnnie didn't like having a rider named Cec and he renamed him as 'Gruff' Garland. As a speedway rider he was an old-time type leg trailer and popular with supporters at several Scottish tracks.I wonder what did Mossman do with his Skirrow(s) in his show?
