Tony Goulding York 1931This photo appears in a 1931 magazine which covered speedway. In the speedway section it carries this photo of Tony Goulding, presumably a York speedway rider. But what is the car he is seated in - was it an early day midget (or similar light car)? Any ideas? Attachments:

So John, is this another clipping from The Auto? It certainly looks like their typeface.
This must have been the track described by Homes of British Speedway as being more properly referred to as Burnholme. According to the book, it only ran in 1930-31 anyway, and it makes no mention of cars ever racing there. I know that doesn't prove anything, but HoBS usually does make a passing reference to it if midgets or similar ever used a particular track.
That rather vague caption does not actually say that Goulding was setting these records in cars of course! Maybe he set the records on a bike but their photo just happens to show him in a car - type unknown to me I'm afraid.

The car looks like it could be a three wheeler Morgan, should be quite effective on dirt.

Oh yes Rod, well spotted. Now that you say it, that tapering boat-tail body behind him could just be one of those. Maybe three wheeler racing on ovals didn't start with Reliant Robins after all...

I am certain the reference to Tony Goulding in the photo is about his speedway bike exploits. That's why I am puzzled about him being in a race car. And yes - it is a clip from a 1931 edition of 'The Auto.'
