Thanks to haflinger121 we have some dates for when the 'International Speedway Cars" or "NACO Speedway Cars" raced here in the UK. There was a mini tour of the South West (St Austell and Newton Abbot stadia) in August 1980. I think these were essentially UK meetings for the English drivers who preferred to race abroad. Tony Stubbs was one of the drivers who raced in these meetings. There are a couple of pictures here. This was clearly before the cars progressed to the formula chassis show in the earlier posts. www.ovaltrack.co.uk/gpmidgets/tome/1980s/1980/1980.htm

Richie is Tony's son.

So it's a world championship with a near all-British field apart from Richie Steepens of Holland? It's a pity that legendary German former world champion Klaus Killanski couldn't have been persuaded to also take part. Out of interest, just how active has Richie Steepens been in GP Midget Car racing in recent times?

Are these the two Naco Speedway Cars you refer to? They look quite nice to me: Attachments:

Any body know if the Stubbs Dastle at the top of this discussion ever had a V8 installed please? I don't quite understand this. Is it meant to be a repeat of a previous inquiry by Rod Pashley in so far as there has been no response so far or was corsa 61's own reply to Rod's query somehow erased from here?

Whose car is this - I think there were three UK based drivers competing in the formula, England's Brian Spicer and Tony Stubbs, and possibly the South African Ian Fraser Kerr?

Yes they were NACO Speedway drivers and thanks to haflinger121 know that they were racing (St Austell, 26 August) for the Jac Claes trophy. Jac was the promoter at Baarlo.

The Naco cars look great and certainly far more like midget cars than others that were appearing at this time. A pity the formula faded away. I would love to have seen about eight or 10 of them in action at my present local speedway at Plymouth. What does Naco stand for? - National something or other?

I think NACO stood for Netherlands Auto Car Organisation but can't swear to it. Ovaltrack will probably know for sure.

![]() Tony Stubbs l...72 Baarlo.jpg [/img] Tony Stubbs leading Pete Smith at Barlo, Holland, in 1972.
Having been looking through the old Midget records I wondered if this picture is in actual fact the 1970 trip to Holland rather than 1972. The Midgets' first overseas outing was a six car mini tour in 1970 and then the next competition involving European drivers was the 1973 European Championship and support meetings.

![]() Tony Stubbs l...72 Baarlo.jpg [/img] Tony Stubbs leading Pete Smith at Barlo, Holland, in 1972.
I posted this picture on the GP Midgets facebook page which enjoys the participation of several friends from the Netherlands. We can be reasonably certain that the original caption is incorrect on two counts - it's a 1970 shot and not 1972. Also, after looking at archive photos of other formulae racing at the time, we think, almost certainly, that the track is Den Bosch Stadium "De Vliert" at s-Hertogenbosch. Everyone is in agreement that the photo is not Baarlo. I have also found a Dutch newspaper article which tells us that was the first match and that the home team beat the English 187-181. It would be interesting to know how those points were arrived at. The English team was listed in a 1970 Spedeworth Wheelspin newsletter... "Pete Smith, Tony Stubbs, Rod Tanswell, Mick Miller, Tony Horsley and Graham North who was driving the Whiting Electrical No. 2 Car, usually driven by Tony Bostock, who couldn't make the trip on this occasion." It was the only time that Graham North raced Midgets. The Dutch trip also seems to have been the starting point for some trouble involving Mick Miller who had also had some altercations with Tony Stubbs in England. This led to both drivers being summoned to a board of control meeting. Mick got banned and quit the sport. I have a copy of the meeting minutes which I shared with Mick's daughter.
