Brian Spicer (Number 29) at Baalo, racing a "Speedway Midget". These were raced during the 1980s, I think. Attachments:

Is Baalo in Holland and wasn't Tony Stubbs another starter in the meetings? That's a great double-question!

The European promoters seem to like the formula cars - I guess they look more business-like than traditional Midgets. The development of circuit cars on the contintnent, Formula Toyota, helped kill off the Midgets in Europe.
Yes it's Baarlo and Tony Stubbs did indeed race with those guys too. I'd be interested if anyone has more pictures from that class / era.

The development of circuit cars on the contintnent, Formula Toyota, nelped kill of the Midgets in Europe. And 'cos they were treating midgets as a formula car sport rather than as a speedway dirt track sport. And not knowing anything about REAL midgets in Oz, kiwiland and USA possibly. IMO.

That's a lovey car owned by Tony Stubbs. He upset quite a few people but was a good driver and more importantly a PERSONALITY. His last stint was about 1982 with NaMICSA.

If I remember correctly, Formula Toyota replaced continental Midgets virtually overnight, sometime in the early ninety's

Interesting that Stubbs' car is sponsored by Derrington's, the carburettor company. I believe this to be the same firm that was set up by Vic Derrington who raced at Greenford in '34.

The previous photo looks more like a formula car (or pavement racer) than a midget, but it's great. More about it, the year, and who is the driver, who looks to be enjoying himself.

Any body know if the Stubbs Dastle at the top of this discussion ever had a V8 installed please?

Is the Baarlo track in Holland still operational? If so, wouldn't it be worth the GPMC trying to takes some cars there to help repopularise the formula in Europe.

Baarlo is a lost circuit - I seem to recall it's a caravan park these days. It was a great place and had the big 1km oval plus a shorter one at one end. It would be great to get the Midgets racing in Europe again and, thanks to the likes of the Kilianski and Scheepens teams, there is still the chance that one day it might happen.
It's quite easy for us non-drivers to suggest a meeting or two overseas but the reality is that it is difficult to organise and also very expensive for the drivers who are all regular working guys who have to pay enough in fuel to race in the UK. The driver base for the GMPC is now mostly in the Midlands so the Channel Tunnel and ferries are a long way from home already.
