What makes you think it is Dicky Case, who was a starter some years after this photo in the 1936 World Championship at Hackney Wick Stadium in London. Wasn't Case earlier involved with West Ham speedway rider Allen Killfoyle in building a midget car somewhere around 1931 or 1932. I think he was but would like some confirmation about this if its possible.

Dickyy Case is the only driver I can find reference to driving a rear engined Midget car pre WW2. No matter weather it is or isn't Case, I would him identified. the photo is not dated, so could be anytime that Midgets raced at Crystal Palace.

Looking at the racing gear worn by the unknown driver I would put the photo as in either 1934 or 1935, more probably the latter year. After 1935 drivers became more 'uniform' in their race dress and led eventually the famed white overalls favoured until the end of the decade. But I still don't know if it's Dicky Case - didn't Allen Kilfoyle also have a rear-engine midget, although I think he was around pre-1934 with his car experimenting.

I have seen one or two photos of this particular car.
The reason most of us think Dicky Case drove this car is because of a photo that appeared in "Light Car" magazine around 35/36.
I have also seen a photo of Morian Hanson -Hackney Wick's Danish Speedway rider- sitting in the car. As you all probably know Hanson was supposed to race in the "world midget car championship" at Hackney. My guese is that it was just a publicity photo.
Another driver of the car is Leon St Nair, he took this car to Sweden; and there is a great photo of him and Billy Murden at the solvana trotting track. St Nair was also booked to race at Belle Vues first all Midget car meeting, but I have not yet discovered if he drove that day.
The Crystal Palace photo could well be a "staged" photo just to show how dangerous and exciting Midget car racing could be!!! The camera man seems to have been in the right place at the right time!

Derek Bridgett Newcastle-under-Lyme As you say - a spot on photo! Amazing when one considers the type of equipment they used in those days. but stage or not it is part of the 'good old days' of the midget car formula.

It's funny Derek, I'd already had the thought that that picture looks like a staged crash, without actually being able to say why. Perhaps it's because I couldn't work out how the driver could have abandoned ship in quite that manner and still be on his feet. In some odd way it reminds me of that AMP Skirrow crash shot from Oz, and I think somebody has already said that one was definitely staged.

Is the stunt Skirrow crash in Australia anywhere on this group please? I'd love to see what it entails.

I knew I'd posted it somewhere here, I just couldn't remember where! If you go to Historic Midget Car Photos and then select Putt Mossman, USA. Scroll down to (I think) the fourth posting and you'll see the pic and the comments about it.
