I can well remember my father Fred Butterworth racing midgets at Belle Vue, probably in the early to mid fifties. The cars were JAP powered with no brakes, virtually 4 wheel speedway bikes. Other names racing at the time were Jack Bottomley the Manchester motor cycle dealer, Derek Bennett who went on to form Chevron racing cars, Eric Pickup and Norman Parker. They appeared on BBC saturday afternoon Grandstand on a Festival of Speed from Belle Vue, before which dad was interviewed by Raymond Baxter. Dad was quite badly injured when he hit a track watering access cover on the top bent and flew it is said several feet into the air. Prior to this he had raced both speedway and stock cars, Jack Butterworth.

There is currently a search for more information on the midget car racing career of Fred Butterworth running on the oldtimespeedway discussion group. Anything about Fred is also welcomed on here. It will be cross referenced to oldtimespeedway.

There is Belle Vue Midget Car information on the Speedway Researcher site. The details of the midget races staged at the speedway meetings are included where available. There is a driver called Butterworth mentioned. Go to the link for the seasons needed. Jim Henry
