Putt Mossman, USA, was a starter in the 1936 World Championship held at Hackney and won by his fellow countryman Cordy Milne. Can anyone identify Mossman's midget. Attachments:

Early model Skirrow by the look of it. Wheels are definitely Skirrow, 'leaning back' front grille suggests the earlier version. Great pic though, haven't seen that before.

The car that Putt Mossman is sitting is one of the very first Skirrows built. He purchased the car in 36. Not only did he drive it in the so called "World Championships" at Hackney but raced it in Holland later that year when Jimmy Baxter took a group of drivers there.
Later that year Mossman raced the car in a challenge match (BIKE V CAR) against Lional Van Praag at the famous Gilmore Stadium LA.
The car and Mossman then went on to tour NZ and OZ.
The car was later sold to an Austrailian, it was also one of the first cars to carry advertising (AMP)

Top job Derek - you've just identified a car that's been bothering me for a while. I bought a magazine-cum-book at an autojumble back at the tail end of the summer, called Motor Racing 1950, edited by Raymond Mays. What attracted me to it was this picture, as well as a pic of Rhiando in one of his 500 cars (not the Trimax). I was wondering who and where, and had decided - purely by gut feel - that it felt more like an Australian track than one of ours. So I wonder - is this Mossman, or a subsequent owner.... This is a staged shot probably to publicise an up & coming midget meeting, there were a couple of these after the war even Jack Brabham got roped in.The car is the ex Putt Mossman Skirrow which was bought by Cec Garland,if it is not him in the pic it would be John Crouch.

Funny, I kept thinking there looked something phoney about that picture and that'll be why - it isn't a 'real' crash. Nice to have it confirmed that it is the ex-Mossman car.
Speaking of Brabham, I'm sure I read somewhere (years ago) that Brabham had once raced at California - the English track near Wokingham rather than the west coast of the USA, you understand! I think it might have been in some old publicity material for the California Country Park, and would therefore, almost certainly have been written by someone who knew nothing about Midgets. I have always assumed a Brabham involvement there to be pure tosh - do you know any different?

As far as i'm aware Brabham only raced midgets here in Oz.
