The big question is: did Jean Reville play a major role in the 1930s start of midget car racing in the UK? Or was he another self-over-hyped legend like Spike Rhiando?

Jean Reville - bit of a dodgy character by the looks of things!

I think he did play a big role in getting the sport started, just look at the way he tried to get special cars made for the sport rather than relying on small road type cars, and he did a lot of good publicity work as well. Was he involved with midget cars when he stayed on in Australia in 1936. Does anyone know.

While on appearances Jean Revile certainly appears as something of a wheeler-dealer he did good work in keeping midget car racing in at least south London eyes in the formative 1934 and 1935 seasons.

From my reading of the items about Jean Reville aside from his off track exploits my opinion is that he did play a major influencing roll in getting midget car racing going at a time when the other track sport speedway was getting towards its peak in the UK. I think he did a good job and played a virtual lone hand in getting the cars into the public eye. Its a pity he never came back from Australia in 1936 and took part in the league racing because he would have been a big points scorer for whatever team he drove for and it would have been great if he had been able to test drivers like Spike Riando, Frank Chiswell, Ginger Pashley and Walter Mackereth. That would probably have been something worth going miles to see.

Reville versus Rhiando, Mackereth and the rest - you've got me wishing for that TARDIS again....
