The first British midget was the Gnat 1934-36. This photo was taken in Australia 1935-36. Attachments:

This pictured is wrongly identified. 1: The cars are not Gnats but early model Skirrows, the term "Gnat" was used by Jean Reville before these cars existed. 2: The photo could not be in Australia as there were only 2 Skirrows raced there one of those was owned by Bill Reynolds & was the later type with a high back. Note also this photo appeared on a web site some years back with no mention of Australia.

Thanks for that dirtpilot. I have seen other photos of this type of car and often wondered exactly what they were, as in: "They look a bit like a Skirrow, but they're not quite right....". Your statement that there was an earlier version sounds spot on. Also the wheels look like Skirrow wheels (any version) and it looks to me as though the front wheels are also spraying some dirt, meaning these cars must be 4WD. As for where the photo was taken, I'm afraid I have no idea.

The two midgets in the photo are definatly early model Skirrows. I'm not sure wher the photo was taken. I,ve seen this photo many times, but I was always too lazy to correct the caption! Any guesses as to where the track is? It doesn't look like either Lea Bridge or Coventry, the obvious choices.
