Tuesday 11 November 1952, St Austell South v North
The outcome of a promise made by the management of the Cornish Stadium to provide a novel type of racing for Cornish speedway followers, was not altogether successful on Tuesday evening, when midget car and Australian style banking side-car racing were introduced for the first time. The meeting attracted an excellent crowd, but, although some keen racing and several highly amusing incidents were seen, it lacked thrills and its organisation could have been improved. It was marred, especially in the earlier heats, by too many false starts and mechanical failures. The meeting was staged on lines similar to speedway, four midget cars powered by Skirrow J.A.P. twin c.c. engines competing in each of the 10 heats. St. Austell's speedway captain. Norman Street, drove well in heat four for the South of England team, when he staved off a strong challenge by Vic King, the North's best driver. Street won deservedly. Former speedway rider, Maurice Hutchens, swerved off the track in heat six but came back in fine style to win heat nine. But in event 12 his car struck one of the electric lamp standards and turned completely over. Hutchens scrambled out unhurt. The match provided a close finish, the South winning due chiefly to the fact that the drivers were untrained and the cars prewar models. Mr. C. J. C. Selleck, one of the promoters, was interested in the project. "It is to be hoped that the next meeting will be entirely different to this one." said Mr. Breese.
Individual point scorers:
South - Charlie May 8, Brian Hitchcock 7. Norman Street and Herbie Plain 6 each, Maurice Hutchens 5
North - Vic King 9. David Watts 8 Dave Hughes 4. Jim Martin and Gordon Leigh 3 each.
