Staffordshire Sentinel - Saturday 20 May 1939There is every indication that next Thursday (25 May 1939) evening's speedway meeting at Hanley Stadium, Sun-street, will one of the outstanding programmes of the season, for, in addition to the return Daily Mail National Trophy match between the Stoke-on-Trent and Hackney Wick motor-cycle teams, there will speedway car racing.
The tit-bit of the car programme will probably be a match race between the two best drivers in the country - Walter Mackereth, of Coventry, and Spike Rhiando, of London — on handicap terms to be determined by Mr. J. France, General Manager of the Stadium. Mr. France will visit Coventry tomorrow further to negotiate with the two drivers; and, if his efforts meet with success, one of the greatest duels midget cars have ever provided in this country should be the result.
Mackereth and Rhiando, of course, are no strangers to the Stadium, for, when they captained the Coventry and Crystal Palace car teams, respectively, last year, they competed against the Stoke side.
In addition to this proposed match, local car drivers in Cecil Heath, of Cobridge, Les. Foster, of Barlaston, and Hal Palfreyman, of Birches Head, will, it is expected, be in opposition, and, in this case, patrons will be given an opportunity of assessing the improvement made by them since last year. All three have been racing at Coventry this season.
Result: Les White beat Spike Rhiando (dnf)
Match Race: Les Foster beat Hal Palfreyman

COBRIDGE TRACK PLANS
Preparations are in progress for the staging of speedway car racing at the Albion Greyhound Track. Cobridge, in about three weeks’ time. A locally-owned company Cobridge Motordrome. Ltd. — has been formed to promote the sport at the Cobridge track, and it is announced that a number of the leading drivers will be secured. Events for local amateur drivers will also be promoted, with a view to encouraging amateur talent in North Staffordshire. Work on the construction of the new speedwav track is progressing rapidly, a number of local men being employed on this task. The track will be approximately a quarter of a mile in length. 40 feet wide and 60 feet in width on the bends. Efforts are to be made to form a Supporters’ Club in connection with the Cobridge Motordrome. It is announced that racing will take place each Saturday night in the season starting at 7.30.

Sunday 2 July 1939, Coventry(Coventry Evening Telegraph, 3 July 1939) AFTER a break of three weeks Brandon Speedway, Coventry, started its series of weekly meetings yesterday, before comparatively small crowd. The racing, however, was good, particularly that contributed by some of the lesser lights such as Charles Bennett, Gene Crowley and Cecil Heath. Until this season, Bennett was Buster Bladon’s mechanic, but until Bladon is ready for racing again Bennett has been trying his luck instead. In this instance, at least, his skill was almost too much for the considered stars in the game, and he ran away with the first three races in great style, defeating Johnny Young, twice, Les White twice, and Walter Mackereth.
Ultimately, in the new competition between the Ace of Spades quartette of drivers and the four others called the Ace of Hearts, he was beaten only once, and that by Walter Mackereth. Bennett’s motor went very well, but his track craft and skilful control in the bends were the basis of his success, and he gave every promise of developing into a first-grade driver. Gene Crowley’s two victories towards the end of the match were welcome signs of this driver having found his form at last. Another star of the future. Cecil Heath, was also responsible for some of the best driving of the programme. Like Bennett and Crowley drove with a 15 yards handicap, and if the three maintain this form they will soon be back among the scratch men.
In view of this sudden burst by the youngsters, some of the old hands like Mackereth, Johnny Young, Les White, and George Turvey, had an unusually quiet afternoon, the first-named failing to win until his fourth race. Final points - Ace of Spades 36; Ace of Hearts 18.
A win in his heat was followed by another smart victory in the final from Cecil Heath in the attractive All Grades handicap event. Second in a fast final, was Gene Crowley, who thus had a most successful afternoon. Crowley lay third to Mackereth a few yards from the post but beat the Coventry captain for the place in a thrilling last second dash.
