MIDGET CAR LEAGUE CANCELS MEETINGS
(Coventry Evening Telegraph, Saturday 29 December 1951)
Mechanical Troubles the Cause
THE Midland Midget Car Racing League suspended its activities last night because of many mechanical failures caused by bad weather, and is not likely to resume again until Spring, when it is hoped that the weather will be kinder to the sport and more cars will be available. Coventry's manager, Mr Charles Ochiltree, said today that in addition to the wet causing engines to fill up, other mechanical difficulties some caused by crashes. ten meant that there were an insufficient number of cars to complete the programme by the scheduled time. He said that the Coventry Team had never encountered any difficultly with the shortage of cars but they had had to loan cars to other clubs during meetings to allow the programme to continue. " I can see continued difficulties," said Mr Ochiltree "until there is a car for every driver. To reduce the present high proportion of crashes something will have to be done about the two-wheel drive instead of the present four-wheel arrangement.”
“Once those difficulties have been overcome," he said. "I think the Midget Car League will be more attractive to the public who have shown a considerable interest in the project.
An additional trouble is the shortage of spare parts and until more parts are available weekly League matches were not a practical proposition.
Dave Hughes. of Northampton, who owns the cars, has stated that the mechanical difficulties could have been overcome with a little more co-operation from the tracks involved. He is to approach football club directors. greyhound promoting compares and amateur athletic officials to discuss plans he has in mind for the continuance of the sport.
The unfinished League programme, which may be resumed in the spring, shows that Johnnie Reason (Coventry) had an accident-free run and was the best individual driver, collecting 44 of a possible 52 points. At Leicester on Boxing Day , Reason reduced the track record by 3 2/5th secs. to 74 1/5th secs.
