It was another great turnout of cars and the second successive meeting in the scorching heat! The drivers who were at Buxton just 7 days prior did a fantastic job of getting there cars ready in time especially those who had experienced mechanical issues or picked up damage at Buxton.
The crowed were treated to 3 great races of close action as is always the case at Aldershot however the hot temperatures would claim a few victims before the final chequered flag of the day would fall.
#77 Neil Clarke would be the first car out of the meeting after sticking a conrod through the side of the block in practice. The two ex-world champions #32 Dan Pooley & #208 Andy Collins would both suffer the same fate in Heat 1 with broken drive shafts pulling off the line, which would put the pair out for the meeting. It was certainly a shame to see this happen again to Andy as we have yet to see him really let loose under green flag conditions yet this season. #3 Leon Smith would also find himself out for the day with a blown differential. #5 Mark Hodges retired from the meeting with a blown engine & #59 Steve Young managed to finish Heat 1 but retired from the remaining races with no oil pressure.
It wasn’t all doom and gloom however as the cars that did survive put on an amazing display for the crowd.
Congratulations to #59 Steve Young on winning a well controlled Heat 1. Also well done to #148 Malcolm Foskett on winning Heat 2 which was the race of the day & huge congratulations to #595 Jamie Young on the winning the Final. Jamie put in an awesome performance all day and came within 0.011 seconds of taking the Aldershot GP Midgets lap record which is still held by #10 David Bonser in his Rear Engined car with a time of 13.180 seconds.
See you next time for the big one! The 2018 Grand Prix Midgets World Championship at Ipswich 21st July.
