The annual race for the Bill Boarer Shield takes place at Rushmoor Arena near Aldershot on Sunday. It's the Midget Club's only outing of the season at Aldershot although there was of course another meeting south of the Thames at Eastbourne earlier in the year. Last year's Aldershot meeting saw several former drivers making the trip to see the cars - of course the driver demographic has changed over the years but back in the 70s and 80s most of the drivers were based in or around the south east. There's a link to the Bill Boarer page on the GP Midgets website and also a further link in that page to details of the Sidewinder that he raced. I think that was Bill's second car and the one he raced before the successful Arrow design. www.ovaltrack.co.uk/gpmidgets/tome/championships/race_bill_boarer.htm

Is there anywhere to read a biog on Bill Boarer who I think died in a swimming accident? Thanx. The main info I have is on the links that are in the above post. Other than that I think Bill started off with a rear engine car which later went to Steve Monk's mechanic John Hawkins. Steve Monk was World Superstox champ in 1974. Bill then built the Sidewinder which is in the links above with Rick Stevens who had also raced Midgets earlier and was more of a long circuit racer. The front end of the Sidewinder was shortened and the design became the first of the Arrows.

Incidentally there were more than five cars racing at Aldershot - the heats wiped out a few unfortunately and I gather that heat one winner Tom Keep had backwards hit into the wall after a tangle. 70s star Frank Boyles was due to visit the track - I've not heard if he made it along however.
