Although I know almost nothing about the development or mechanical details of so-called 'Batson midgets', this event recently came to light from the oldtimespeedway website via the speedway researcher site.
Friday 19th April 1957 Wimbledon Stadium, London Wimbledon Dons 73 Poland 34 (Challenge)
During the above speedway meeting, this happened:
DEMONSTRATION CAR RACE: Ted Friend beat Charles Batson 78.2

The programme for this race at Wimbledon - there's a comment by ptomoter Ronnie Greene in his notes on page 3 - can be found on the oldtimespeedway site's speedway-in-print section. However, here's a direct link which hopefully will work as live. Otherwise, cut and paste it into your browser. www.box.com/s/1pzxzfzeiqk95msjp3ow

My apologies ytf. I had terrible trouble trying to isolate that small portion of the page and turn it into an attachment. Now, I think it only works on my computer, because it can go directly to the original file which yours of course, cannot.
I will leave this here for a bit and then delete both my posts if you would then do the same to yours, that would keep things tidier. Incidentally, although John's hoped for link doesn't work (which is why I was trying to make things easier) pasting the URL into your browser works fine.
