He rode in the UK for Norwich in the mid 1950's and was a team mate of Ove Fundin. Merv was runner up in the NZ solo champs twice in 1953/54 and 61/62 and won the Auckland championships six times. He was also successful speedway driver finishing third in the NZ Midgetcar champs in 1965/66, and also promoted speedway and is credited with putting on the first ever stockcar meeting in Auckland.
